Chester is 45 minutes from Liverpool and is the strongest half day option from this port. The city walls are the most complete Roman and medieval circuit in Britain and you can walk the full two mile loop, or a fifteen minute section for the highlights. The Rows are two tiered medieval shopping galleries found nowhere else in the world. There is a Roman amphitheatre, the largest uncovered in Britain, and a cathedral with a Norman core. The centre is compact and the walking is flat apart from the wall steps. For guests who want a market town day with shopping and lunch rather than a driving tour, this is the answer.

Into North Wales

Beyond Chester the road runs along the north Welsh coast. Conwy is about 100 minutes from Liverpool: a castle built by Edward I between 1283 and 1287, a complete circuit of town walls, and the smallest house in Britain on the quay. Llandudno next door is a preserved Victorian seaside resort with a pier and the Great Orme tramway. Bodnant Garden is nearby and spectacular in May and June. Snowdonia proper begins beyond that and is too far for most calls. Our honest guidance: with eight hours ashore do Chester properly; with ten or more, Conwy and Llandudno become realistic; Snowdonia needs a turnaround day.
