The Coast

The Jurassic Coast runs 95 miles through Dorset and Devon and is a World Heritage Site for its geology, with rock layers spanning 185 million years exposed in sequence along the cliffs. From Portland the highlights are close. Durdle Door is a natural limestone arch standing in the sea, about 35 minutes away, reached by a steep path down from the car park and back up, which is the main physical demand of the day. Lulworth Cove next to it is an almost perfect circular bay with much easier access and a level walk from the village. Chesil Beach, an 18 mile shingle bar, is visible from the port road itself.

Corfe, Weymouth And The Stonehenge Question

Corfe Castle is 40 minutes away, a Norman fortress deliberately destroyed by Parliament in 1646 and left as a dramatic ruin above a stone village, with a steam railway running below it. Weymouth is 15 minutes from the port and is a Georgian seaside town with a harbour, a sand beach and good seafood, which suits a short call or guests who do not want a long drive. Guests often ask about Stonehenge: it is about 80 minutes each way, so it is possible on a call of nine hours or more but it costs you the coast. Our view is that the Jurassic Coast is the reason your ship stopped here, and Stonehenge is available from Southampton on another day.
