The Dartford Factor
Tilbury sits on the north bank of the Thames in Essex, about 25 miles east of central London. In free flowing traffic the drive is 60 to 75 minutes. The variable is the Dartford Crossing, the tunnel and bridge just east of the port, which carries a charge that must be paid online and which backs up badly at peak times and after incidents. We route to avoid it where the itinerary allows and we time departures around it where it cannot be avoided. This is the single biggest difference between a smooth Tilbury day and a stressful one, and it is not something a visitor would know to plan for.
What The Day Looks Like
From Tilbury the natural London day starts in the east and works west, which is the opposite of a Southampton day. Greenwich is closest: the Royal Observatory and the prime meridian, the Cutty Sark, the Old Royal Naval College painted hall and a good market for lunch. Then the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, then Westminster if time allows. Ending in the east rather than the centre also makes the return quicker. Tilbury is a turnaround port for some lines, in which case we handle Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and City airport transfers with luggage, and can add Greenwich or Windsor on the way if the flight is late.
