Bath In Half The Time
Bath is about 30 to 40 minutes from Avonmouth, compared with 90 minutes from Southampton. That single fact means a six hour call here delivers what a ten hour call delivers from Southampton. The Roman Baths take about 90 minutes with the audio guide, the Abbey is next door, and the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge are a walk apart. Add a Georgian tea room and you have a complete day with time to spare. Bath is compact and walkable but built on a hill, so the Royal Crescent involves a gentle climb from the centre. Timed tickets for the Roman Baths are strongly advised in summer.
Bristol And The Mendips
Bristol itself is 20 minutes: the Clifton Suspension Bridge by Brunel, the SS Great Britain which was the first iron steamship to cross the Atlantic and is now in the dock where she was built, and a harbourside with street art including several Banksy works in his home city. South of Bristol, Wells is the smallest cathedral city in England with a scissor arch interior that photographs beautifully, and Cheddar Gorge nearby is the largest gorge in Britain, both around an hour. The southern Cotswolds around Castle Combe and Lacock are 45 minutes and quieter than the northern villages that everyone visits.
