Designing For Energy, Not Distance
The usual failure is not distance but accumulation: three hundred metres here, a flight of stairs there, twenty minutes standing in a queue, and by the third stop the day is over for the oldest member. So we count the standing and the steps, not the miles. Practically that means a maximum of two substantial stops, a proper seated lunch of at least an hour in the middle rather than a quick sandwich, timed tickets so nobody queues, and the vehicle brought as close to the entrance as the site allows. We also plan a stop with a view that can be enjoyed from the car if walking is not possible that day, so a bad morning does not cost the whole outing.
The Details Children Forget To Ask
Ask these before the trip, not during it. Medication timing, because a day out can shift a dose by hours. Whether stairs are manageable at all, since some sites have no lift and the answer changes which port day works. Hearing, because a guided tour in a large echoing cathedral can be useless and a driver speaking directly is better. Toilet frequency, which determines stop spacing more than anything else. Travel insurance and any pre existing conditions, and whether they carry a list of medications in English. Our vehicle has a lower step in height than most and captain seats with armrests. Tell us all of this at booking and the day is built around it quietly, without anyone being made to feel like a problem.
