Split The Stop, Not The Group

The technique that makes this work: choose stops that offer two experiences in one place, so different members can do different things and still be together for arrival and departure. Examples we use. Dunrobin Castle: grandparents take the terrace and the tea room, children go to the falconry display, parents tour the interior. The New Forest: a level walk and ponies for children, a bench and a view for grandparents. Bath: the Roman Baths for the middle generation, a tea room and level shopping streets for the others. Greenwich: the park and the Cutty Sark deck for children, the observatory for those who can manage the hill. Everyone arrives together, disperses for 45 minutes and regroups.

The Practical Load

A three generation group is usually five to seven people plus a pram, a folding wheelchair or a walking frame, plus bags. That is a vehicle sizing question we settle at booking rather than at the terminal. Child seats are fitted free and are a legal requirement under 12 or 135cm. Meal timing is the other pressure point: children eat at 12:00, grandparents often prefer a proper sit down meal, and a rushed lunch damages the afternoon for both. We book a table at noon in a place that suits both, which is usually a hotel or a pub with a garden rather than a busy tourist cafe. The driver speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, so grandparents can ask for what they need directly.
