When It Is Not Worth It
For one or two people on a short tender call with a simple headline sight, a ship excursion is usually the better value and carries the return guarantee. Examples where we say so: a five hour tender call at Portree where the coach goes to the same viewpoint we would; a short call at Kirkwall where the sites are close together; a standard Edinburgh Castle visit from Leith where the walking is easy and the bus is frequent. In these cases the per person price difference is real and the ship tour is not meaningfully worse. Saying this costs us a booking and keeps a customer, which is the trade we prefer.
When It Is Worth It Even For Two
It flips when any of these apply. The port has a long transfer and the ship tour is priced accordingly, such as Greenock to Loch Lomond or Dover to Canterbury, where two private fares are close to two coach fares. You want somewhere the ship does not go, which is most of the second visit list. Anyone has mobility, dietary or language needs. It is a turnaround day with luggage. Or the schedule is tight and a coach departing 40 minutes late would cost you the sight entirely. For solo travellers there is one more factor: a driver who speaks your language and knows where you are is a practical safety measure in an unfamiliar country, particularly for older solo passengers.
