The route
The NC500 loops from Inverness around the northern Highlands and back. The scenery in the northwest, around Applecross and Assynt, is the reason to do it.
How long it really takes
Three days is a blur. Five is workable. Seven lets you stop. The single-track sections around Applecross cannot be rushed regardless of how the map calculates it.
Accommodation
Beds in the far northwest are limited and book out months ahead in summer. This is the part of Scotland where planning ahead genuinely matters.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
What language support actually means
Our chauffeur-guides speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English, from first enquiry to final drop-off. In Edinburgh you can manage in English. On a single-track Highland road when the weather turns, having someone explain the options in your own language is a different kind of comfort.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes about four 26-inch cases — hence four guests with full luggage. Five or more with checked bags means a second vehicle, and we say so before you book rather than at the kerb.
