Rain
It rains on Skye. A waterproof jacket with a hood beats an umbrella, which the wind will destroy. Waterproof trousers sound excessive until the Fairy Pools walk.
Wind
The wind is the real factor. On exposed ridges it removes hats, tripods and occasionally balance. Layers matter more than a single thick coat.
Footwear
Walking shoes with grip. Not hiking boots necessarily, but not city trainers either. Most of the good viewpoints involve a short walk on wet ground.
How weather changes the day
Four seasons in a day is not a joke here. We do not cancel for rain — we reorder. If Quiraing is clouded in we go to Neist Point and come back the next morning. That flexibility is the practical value of a private vehicle.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes about four 26-inch cases — hence four guests with full luggage. Five or more with checked bags means a second vehicle, and we say so before you book rather than at the kerb.
The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
