Cards and cash
Contactless is universal, including buses and small shops. Some Highland pubs and car parks are cash-only; carrying £50 covers it.
Scottish notes
Scottish banks issue their own notes. They are legal currency across the UK, though some English shops hesitate. Spend them before leaving Scotland.
Tipping
10% in restaurants if service is not included. Taxis: round up. Hotel staff: optional. Nobody will be offended either way.
Booking and changes
A £180 deposit secures the dates and the balance is settled before departure. Changes more than 30 days out are usually free; inside 30 days it depends on whether we can refill the slot. The deposit is non-refundable, stated before you pay. If we are the ones who cannot deliver, we refund in full including the deposit.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.
