When does driving to London Heathrow / Gatwick make sense?

When flights at Edinburgh (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA) are cancelled — fog, snow, strikes, technical faults — the next free seats from Scotland can be days away. Airlines and booking sites often have seats sooner from English airports. Ask the airline (in writing) whether it will rebook you from London Heathrow / Gatwick and whether it will reimburse ground transport; under UK CAA guidance it must offer rerouting, but reimbursement of a car depends on the airline and situation, so keep your receipt.

It is also a simple planned option: a long-haul ticket from London Heathrow / Gatwick can be cheaper or more direct, and a private car from your Edinburgh or Glasgow hotel or home avoids changing trains with luggage.

How much does it cost, and what does each person pay?

From £700 one way for the whole vehicle from Edinburgh or Glasgow, including the driver's empty return. Night journeys (23:00–06:00) add £15. The final fixed price is confirmed on WhatsApp, usually within 15 minutes, depending on exact pickup point and time.

How long is the drive and which route do we take?

The drive is about 400 miles to Heathrow (Gatwick a little further), normally about 7½–8 hours including breaks, usually via the M74/M6 then M1 or M40, or the A1(M) on the east side, depending on traffic. Times are approximate and depend on traffic, roadworks and weather. On longer runs the driver takes proper rest breaks for safety, and we plan the departure so you reach the airport with time for check-in and security.

Train, flight or private car — which is better?

Be honest about the options:

• Train: LNER (east coast) and Avanti West Coast (west coast) run Edinburgh–London in roughly 4½–5 hours, then you still need the Elizabeth line, Heathrow Express or Gatwick Express to the airport. Per person it is usually cheaper, but after mass cancellations trains can be crowded, late-night services are limited, and changes with large suitcases are hard.
• Another flight: domestic flights from Scotland may be full during disruption.
• Private car: door to terminal, any hour a driver is available, no luggage changes — and split between four or five people the cost per person comes close to last-minute train fares.
