The season

May to September, with games most weekends somewhere in Scotland. Braemar in early September is the famous one; the royal family often attends.

Big versus small

Braemar and Cowal are large and ticketed. Village games — Glenfinnan, Ballater, Luss — are smaller, cheaper and considerably more atmospheric.

Highland Games — Where and When

What to expect

Heavy events, highland dancing, massed pipe bands and a beer tent. Half a day is enough. Bring something waterproof regardless of the forecast.

The rhythm of stops

We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.

What we will not do

We do not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission — we take none. We do not add unrequested items and charge for them, or recommend hotels we have not used. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive suits you better, we say so even when it costs us the booking.

Booking and changes

A £180 deposit secures the dates and the balance is settled before departure. Changes more than 30 days out are usually free; inside 30 days it depends on whether we can refill the slot. The deposit is non-refundable, stated before you pay. If we are the ones who cannot deliver, we refund in full including the deposit.

How weather changes the day

Four seasons in a day is not a joke here. We do not cancel for rain — we reorder. If Quiraing is clouded in we go to Neist Point and come back the next morning. That flexibility is the practical value of a private vehicle.
