The Night of 13 February 1692

For twelve days, 120 government soldiers — many bearing the Campbell name — had been guests of the MacDonalds of Glencoe, sharing their food and fires under the sacred Highland code of hospitality. At 5am on 13 February 1692, they turned on their hosts. 38 MacDonalds were killed outright, including the chief MacIain; around 40 more, mostly women and children, died of exposure fleeing into a blizzard. The order, signed by Secretary of State Dalrymple with King William's countersignature, cited the clan's late oath of allegiance — a pretext for making an example of a small, vulnerable clan.

Why It Still Matters & Visiting Today

The massacre became a byword for 'murder under trust' — a crime worse than killing, because it violated hospitality itself. To this day, the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe famously displays a sign: 'No Hawkers or Campbells'. Visit today: the Glencoe Visitor Centre tells the full story; the memorial cross stands in Glencoe village; and the 三姊妹山(Three Sisters)viewpoint lets you see the escape routes into the hidden valleys. History transforms this landscape — a MegaSpace private tour pairs the dramatic scenery with the story told properly, in Chinese or English, at your own pace.
