Why Kent Beats London Here
Canterbury is 30 minutes from Dover. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, and the place where Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 which made it medieval England most important pilgrimage destination. The city inside its walls is compact and walkable with the Norman castle ruins, the Westgate and punting on the Stour. Leeds Castle is 50 minutes away, built on two islands in a lake, owned by six medieval queens and used by Henry VIII, with grounds, a maze and black swans. Either one alone is a strong half day. Together with lunch they make a full day that never exceeds an hour from the ship.
Timing And The Third Option
A comfortable order: Leeds Castle at opening around 10:00 when the grounds are empty and the light on the lake is best, allowing two hours including the walk from the car park which is longer than people expect. Then Canterbury for lunch and the cathedral, allowing two and a half hours. Back at Dover with a large cushion. If you want a third element, Rye in East Sussex is a preserved medieval town of cobbled streets about 50 minutes west, and the White Cliffs are on the doorstep. Canterbury Cathedral closes to visitors during services and the times shift, so we check the day rather than assume, and timed tickets are worth booking in summer.
