Seventeen hundred square miles — the UK's largest national park. You can't see it in a day; you pass through it. The A9 runs along its western side — most itineraries that 'visit the Cairngorms' really mean driving through this stretch.
Around Aviemore
Aviemore is the practical base. The funicular up Cairngorm Mountain (note: it's not the highest peak), Loch Morlich beach and Rothiemurchus Forest are all within twenty minutes' drive — ideal for a half-day.
Wildlife
Red squirrels, ospreys in summer, reindeer on the hills. None are guaranteed — anyone who promises you'll see them is spinning a story. Rothiemurchus Forest gives you the best chance of red squirrels.
Autumn colour
Mid-October is the most beautiful time of year. Birch and larch turn gold against the dark pines. Perthshire (Dunkeld, Loch Tummel) has even denser autumn colour than the Cairngorms, and it's on the way.
Fitting It into Your Itinerary
The Cairngorms lie on the A9 between Edinburgh and Inverness, right on the way. If your trip includes Loch Ness or the Isle of Skye, there's no detour. There's skiing in winter, but for most Asian visitors the snowy scenery alone is enough.
How long each driving day really is
Most legs run two to three hours of actual driving, broken by stops. The longest single day on the ten-day loop is around four hours, and we break it with a proper lunch rather than a service station. We stop roughly every ninety minutes — some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee. Highland roads need extra allowance: what the map calls two hours is closer to three.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes roughly four 26-inch cases. That is why we say four guests with full luggage — for five or more with checked bags we arrange a second vehicle rather than promising a squeeze that does not work.
What we will not do
We will not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission, add items you did not ask for and charge for them, or tell you a hotel is good if we have not used it. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive would genuinely be better value for you, or a small-group tour suits you more — we will say so, even when it costs us the booking.
The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.

Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
