Why it matters
Inverness is the Highland capital and the launching point for Loch Ness, Skye and the North Coast 500. It is about three and a half hours from Edinburgh by road. Its airport connects to London, Amsterdam and some European cities — if your trip is Highlands-only, flying in saves eight hours of driving.
The city itself
Not large — half a day covers it. The River Ness runs through the centre, there is a red sandstone castle (now a courthouse, only partly open) and the Victorian Market. Honestly: Inverness is a practical base rather than a destination, so keep expectations modest.
What is within reach
Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle are thirty minutes; Culloden battlefield fifteen; Portree on Skye two and a half hours; Ullapool for the Outer Hebrides ferry an hour twenty. The North Coast 500 starts and finishes here.
Culloden
The 1746 battle that ended the last Jacobite rising in under forty minutes and effectively finished the Highland clan system. The visitor centre is well done and the battlefield is preserved. It is a quiet place, unlike most attractions — allow ninety minutes.
Staying here
More choice and better value than elsewhere in the Highlands. If your itinerary includes Loch Ness and Skye, a night here is sensible and saves considerable driving compared with returning to Edinburgh.

Toyota Alphard 和 Vellfire 是七座，但七个座位和七件行李是两回事。第三排立起那阵，尾箱大约放到四件 26 吋行李箱。所以我们说「最多四位客人连全套行李」——五位或以上有托运行李，我们会安排第二架车，不会勉强塞。

实际车程要几耐
地图估的时间在高地通常乐观三成。单线道要不停靠哪会车，夏天再加露营车，两个钟的路段实际接近三个钟。我们排行程用真实时间，所以我们的日程纸面上看起来短些——但不会做不完。
停留节奏
我们大约每九十分钟停一次。有些是观景点，有些纯粹因为有人想饮杯咖啡或者去洗手间。高地部分路段四十英里没有任何设施，所以这些停留点是预先规划的，不是即兴。

应该带什么
有帽的防水外套胜过雨伞(风会吹烂把遮)、分层衣物胜过一件厚褛、有抓地力的步行鞋。夏天最高十七至二十度、晚上跌到十度、高地更冻。这些不是客套提醒，是每个月都有客人低估的嘢。
