VAT refunds are gone
The UK abolished tax-free shopping (VAT refunds) for overseas visitors in 2021. Don't plan your shopping budget around a refund that no longer exists — a lot of travel information still hasn't been updated, and it's the point we most often have to clarify.
Worth buying in Scotland
Cashmere (Johnstons of Elgin is the best-known Scottish brand), Harris Tweed (only genuine with the certification label) and distillery-exclusive whisky bottlings. These three really are better bought locally than back home.
Not worth it
The tartan souvenir shops on the Royal Mile mostly sell the same imported stock at high prices. Standard whiskies are often cheaper in supermarkets than at distilleries. We'll tell you this straight.
Bicester Village
A designer outlet an hour north-west of London, very popular with Asian visitors and therefore very busy. Allow four hours including the drive. Weekends are packed. If your trip includes London and you want designer brands, the prices here are genuinely good.
Luggage space
People usually shop on a ten-day UK trip, and most underestimate how much. Bring a half-empty suitcase or arrange to ship a parcel from London. Whisky over 100ml must go in checked luggage — check your destination's duty-free allowance before buying six bottles.
How long each driving day really is
Most legs run two to three hours of actual driving, broken by stops. The longest single day on the ten-day loop is around four hours, and we break it with a proper lunch rather than a service station. We stop roughly every ninety minutes — some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee. Highland roads need extra allowance: what the map calls two hours is closer to three.
What the vehicle actually holds
The Alphard and Vellfire seat seven, but seven seats and seven suitcases are different problems. With the rear row up, the boot takes roughly four 26-inch cases. That is why we say four guests with full luggage — for five or more with checked bags we arrange a second vehicle rather than promising a squeeze that does not work.
What we will not do
We will not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission, add items you did not ask for and charge for them, or tell you a hotel is good if we have not used it. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive would genuinely be better value for you, or a small-group tour suits you more — we will say so, even when it costs us the booking.
How long the drive really takes
Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.
The rhythm of stops
We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.
