What happens

A torchlight procession on the 30th, the street party and concert on the 31st, and the Loony Dook — swimming in the Forth — on the 1st. Tickets are required for the street party.

Booking

Hotels triple in price and sell out by October. This is the single hardest date of the year to arrange in Edinburgh, and late bookings rarely work out well.

Hogmanay — Edinburgh at New Year

The cold

It is around three degrees and often wet. Layers, waterproofs and proper boots. The atmosphere is worth it; the temperature is not negotiable.

How long the drive really takes

Map estimates in the Highlands are typically a third optimistic. Single-track roads mean constant pulling in to pass, and in summer add motorhomes: a two-hour leg is closer to three. We plan on real times, which is why our days look shorter on paper and actually finish.

The rhythm of stops

We stop roughly every ninety minutes. Some are viewpoints, some are simply because someone wants a coffee or a toilet. On some Highland stretches there is nothing for forty miles, so these stops are planned rather than improvised.

What language support actually means

Our chauffeur-guides speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English, from first enquiry to final drop-off. In Edinburgh you can manage in English. On a single-track Highland road when the weather turns, having someone explain the options in your own language is a different kind of comfort.

What we will not do

We do not push you into shops or restaurants that pay commission — we take none. We do not add unrequested items and charge for them, or recommend hotels we have not used. If your plan does not fit the days, or self-drive suits you better, we say so even when it costs us the booking.
