For a first visit, Edinburgh. For the Highlands and the west, Glasgow is genuinely closer and most itineraries ignore that. We drive between them almost daily — here is the difference that actually matters to your days.
We are based in West Calder, exactly midway between the two, which spares us having a favourite. The choice usually comes down to three things: what you want to see, where you land, and how much driving you are willing to do before breakfast.
The short answer
First visit, mostly city and castles, three or four nights — Edinburgh. Highlands, west coast, Loch Lomond or Skye — Glasgow saves you an hour or more every single day.

The pattern is clear: everything west and north-west is closer to Glasgow; everything east and south is closer to Edinburgh. Loch Ness and Inverness are roughly equal.
The case for Edinburgh
- The city itself is the attraction. The Old Town, the Castle, Arthur's Seat and the New Town are a genuine two full days, and the walk between them is part of it.
- Better for the east. St Andrews, the Fife coastal villages, the Borders abbeys and Northumberland are all comfortable half-days.
- The airport is closer to the centre. Nine miles, 25 to 35 minutes; our transfer is £75.
- More hotels at the top end. If you want a five-star, Edinburgh has more of them.
The cost of choosing Edinburgh: every Highland day starts with an extra half hour to an hour of driving, and in August the city is at Festival capacity — hotel prices roughly double and the streets are full.
The case for Glasgow
- Closer to the Highlands. Loch Lomond is 35 minutes. From Edinburgh it is 1 hour 20. On a five-day trip that difference is most of a day.
- Cheaper, and not marginally. Hotels and restaurants are noticeably less than Edinburgh, particularly in August.
- A different kind of city. Victorian architecture, the Kelvingrove, Mackintosh, and the best live music in Scotland. Visitors who expect a lesser Edinburgh are usually surprised.
- Better for the west coast. Oban, the ferries to Mull and Islay, and the Argyll peninsulas.
The cost of choosing Glasgow: fewer of the postcard sights, and St Andrews and the east become long days rather than short ones.
Where you land matters more than people expect
If you fly into Glasgow and base yourself in Edinburgh, you begin and end the trip with a 50-mile cross-country transfer — £130 each way in a private vehicle, or a tram, a train and another journey at the far end with your cases. It is not a disaster, but it is two hours of your holiday spent on logistics.
Where the flights are close in price, matching the base to the airport is usually the better trade. Where they are not, the cross-city transfer is a fixed cost you can plan around: Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh city centre, or Edinburgh Airport to Glasgow city centre, is the same £130 either way.
The option most people miss: neither
You do not have to base yourself in either city. Stirling, Callander or Loch Lomond put you an hour closer to the Highlands than Edinburgh and an hour closer to the east than Glasgow, at lower prices than both. For a trip that is mostly about landscape rather than cities, this is often the best answer and almost nobody suggests it.
Equally, you do not have to have one base at all. A multi-day journey that moves — Edinburgh, then the Highlands, then Skye — means no day begins with a two-hour drive out and ends with a two-hour drive back. It costs more in hotels and less in wasted hours.
What we would do with four nights
Two nights Edinburgh — the city on foot, and one day out to St Andrews or the Borders. Then move west or north for two nights rather than commuting from Edinburgh each day. The moving is the point; the driving out and back twice is the thing to avoid.
