We are a chauffeur company, so treat this with the scepticism it deserves — but the honest answer is that self-driving wins for some trips and loses badly for others. Here is where the line actually falls.
Most articles on this question are written by companies that want to rent you a car, or by companies that want to drive you. We are the second kind. So rather than argue, here is the arithmetic, the road conditions, and the cases where we tell enquiries to hire a car instead.
The cost, honestly
A small hire car in Scotland runs roughly £45–£70 a day in summer, before fuel, before parking, and before the excess waiver most drivers end up buying. Add fuel at Highland prices, add £15–£25 a day parking in Edinburgh, and a week is realistically £600–£850 for two people.
Our day rate is £490 (Nov–Mar) or £520 (Apr–Oct) for the whole vehicle, up to four guests, with fuel, parking, tolls and a driver included. For two people that is more expensive. For four it is close. For a family of four staying five days it is often cheaper once you count the parking and the fuel you did not think about.
The honest summary: for one or two travellers on a budget, self-drive is cheaper. For four adults, the gap narrows to almost nothing. Above four, a hire car does not fit you anyway.
Driving on the left is not the hard part
Visitors worry about the left-hand side. In practice most adapt within an hour on a motorway. What actually catches people out is different:
- Single-track roads with passing places. Much of Skye, Applecross and the far north-west is one lane wide with numbered lay-bys. There is an etiquette to who reverses, and getting it wrong in front of a local farmer is a memorable experience.
- Sheep. They lie on warm tarmac and do not move for horns. On the road to Glencoe this is not an occasional novelty; it is Tuesday.
- Distance versus time. Edinburgh to Portree on Skye is 230 miles. In most countries that is three hours. Here it is five hours fifteen, and that is without stopping.
- Weather that changes the route. The A82 through Glencoe closes in bad snow. The Skye Bridge takes side winds. Knowing when to turn back is local knowledge.
Where self-drive genuinely wins
- Two travellers, two weeks, no fixed plan. If your trip is about wandering and stopping wherever, a car is the right tool and cheaper.
- Confident drivers who want the roads themselves. The A82 and the Bealach na Bà are among the best driving roads in Europe. If that is the point of your trip, do not hire someone to take it away from you.
- Long stays with a base. Renting a cottage for ten days and doing short trips out — a car is obviously right.
Where a private driver wins clearly
- Short trips. On a three- or four-day visit, half a day lost to a rental desk queue and getting used to the car is a meaningful fraction of the holiday.
- Groups of four or more. Four adults with four large cases do not fit in a standard hire car. Two cars means two drivers and a convoy.
- Elderly parents or small children. Someone else driving means everyone in the family talks to each other, and someone can sit with the child who feels sick on the A82.
- You want to drink. A distillery day is a different day when the driver is not counting drams. Scotland's drink-drive limit is lower than England's — 22 micrograms per 100ml of breath — and a single measure can put you over.
- Winter. December to February in the Highlands means ice, short daylight and genuine risk on unfamiliar roads.
A middle path most people do not consider
You do not have to choose once for the whole trip. A common pattern among our guests: hire a car for the days around a city base, and book a driver for the two hardest days — the long Highland run and the distillery day. It costs less than a full week of chauffeur hire and removes the two days where self-driving is genuinely unpleasant.
If your trip starts with a flight, the same logic applies to arrival day. Rather than collecting a car while jet-lagged, some guests start with a chauffeured first day and pick up the hire car the following morning, rested.
Real journey times, measured
These are our own drive times, door to door, in normal conditions with no stops. Route planners tend to be optimistic about the Highlands.
| Route | Distance | Realistic driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh → Glencoe | 100 miles | 2 hr 20 min |
| Edinburgh → Loch Ness (Urquhart Castle) | 165 miles | 3 hr 20 min |
| Edinburgh → Portree, Isle of Skye | 230 miles | 5 hr 15 min |
| Edinburgh → St Andrews | 50 miles | 1 hr 10 min |
| Edinburgh → Glasgow | 47 miles | 1 hr 5 min |
Add roughly 40% for a day with photographs, lunch and a castle. A "day trip to Skye" from Edinburgh means ten and a half hours of driving alone. It is possible. It is not a good day.
What we tell people who ask us
If you are two people, comfortable driving, and staying more than a week — hire a car. You will spend less and you will have a better time. We would rather tell you that than take a booking you regret.
If you are four or more, or travelling with parents or children, or the trip is under five days, or you want the whisky — the arithmetic and the day both go the other way. Our day tours and multi-day journeys are priced for the whole vehicle, so the more of you there are, the better the comparison looks.
