It is also a place where weather, daylight and distance shape the whole day. This guide covers what a shoot costs, which months suit which look, what to bring, how to plan for rain and how booking works with our Scotland pre-wedding photoshoot tour.
What a pre-wedding shoot in Scotland costs
Most couples weigh three things: the photographer, hair and make-up, and transport between locations. Booking them separately means coordinating three suppliers and working out who drives whom. Our package puts them together: a partner photographer, a hair & make-up artist, a private Toyota Alphard and a driver. Prices are per couple.

The Highlands day typically covers Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and Loch Lubnaig in the Trossachs, with Loch Lomond as an option. You receive edited photos plus all originals online; the number of edited images and the delivery time are confirmed when you book. Full details are on the pre-wedding tour page.
Best months: what each season looks like
- Spring (March–May): fresh green hills, lambs in the fields, blossom in Edinburgh's parks in April and May. Weather is changeable but often bright, and evenings lengthen quickly.
- Summer (June–August): the longest days and the mildest temperatures. Light can be harsh at midday, so the photographer will lean on early or late hours. Popular spots are busier, and midges can appear in the Highlands on still, damp evenings.
- Autumn (September–November): bracken turns copper, birch woods go gold, and low sun gives warm light for most of the day. Late September to October is a favourite for many couples.
- Winter (December–February): snow on the Glencoe peaks is possible, the light stays low and soft, and locations are quiet. It is cold, and the day is short, so the schedule must be tight. Our Scotland winter guide covers road and weather basics.

Scotland sits far north, so daylight changes dramatically through the year. In midwinter Edinburgh gets only about seven hours of daylight, with the sun low all day. Around midsummer the evenings stay light very late. Spring and autumn sit in between, with comfortable working hours.
For a half day in Edinburgh this is rarely a problem. For a Highlands full day it matters a lot: Glencoe is roughly two and a half to three hours' drive from Edinburgh, so in December and January part of the journey happens in the dark, and the shoot window is compressed. In those months we plan the order of stops around the light rather than the map. In summer the opposite applies: we avoid the flattest midday light and can stay out for a golden-hour finish.
What to prepare: gown, shoes and layers
- Gown: lighter, shorter-train dresses are far easier on moorland and wet paths. If you prefer not to travel with a gown, our gown arrangement (+£60) means we book and accompany a fitting at a local bridal rental shop; the rental fee is paid directly to the shop.
- Shoes: bring two pairs. Wear walking boots or trainers between spots and change into dress shoes only for the frame itself. Ground is often soft even in dry weeks.
- Layers: thermal underlayers fit under most gowns and suits. Bring warm coats, a blanket or shawl, gloves and a hat for between shots. Wind on Rannoch Moor can feel much colder than the forecast.
- Second outfit: many couples bring a casual or traditional outfit for a change of mood; tell us in advance so the make-up artist can plan.
- Small kit: tissues, safety pins, a bag to keep the hem clean, water and snacks. The Alphard has room to change and store everything.
Your rain plan
Rain in Scotland is a matter of when, not if. It is also what gives the landscape its moody, cinematic look, and many of the best images come from a break in the cloud. A sensible plan includes:
- Clear umbrellas (they photograph well) and waterproof covers for shoes and hems.
- Flexible routing: with a private car and driver, we can move between valleys to find drier pockets or wait out a shower in the vehicle.
- Covered options in Edinburgh, such as closes, arches and doorways in the Old Town.
- An honest call on safety: in severe weather warnings we will discuss changing the date or route rather than push on.
A sample timeline for the day
Highlands full day (illustrative, about 9–10 h):
- Early morning: hair and make-up, then pick-up in Edinburgh.
- Mid-morning: Loch Lubnaig and the Trossachs for calm water and woodland.
- Late morning to early afternoon: Glencoe, the signature mountain backdrop.
- Afternoon: Rannoch Moor for wide, empty landscape.
- Optional: Loch Lomond on the way back, then return to Edinburgh.
Edinburgh half day (about 4–5 h): make-up, then a mix of Old Town streets, viewpoints and green spaces such as Calton Hill or the Dean Village area, timed to the best light. Exact stops are agreed with you and the photographer beforehand.
Permissions and locations
Small private shoots on Edinburgh's public streets are generally fine. Some sites are different: places such as Edinburgh Castle grounds and National Trust for Scotland properties may require permission or a fee for professional or commercial photography. Rules change, so please check with the site before you set your heart on it, and tell us early so we can plan.
