Lagavulin Distillery: Tours, Prices and How to Visit

Lagavulin sits on Islay’s Kildalton coast, about three miles east of Port Ellen between Laphroaig and Ardbeg. Its rich, smoky-sweet malts, led by the 16 Year Old, make it one of the island’s best-known names. In 2026 tours run from £22 for the Classic Distillery Tour to £130, booking is strongly recommended and under-8s are not admitted.

What makes Lagavulin distinctive?

Lagavulin (樂加維林) is usually described as heavily peated yet rich and rounded: smoke and sea air layered over a dried-fruit, smoky-sweet depth. Slow distillation is often credited for that weight. The distillery dates from the early 1800s and is part of Diageo’s portfolio, run through its Classic Malts family.

Its setting is a big part of the visit: a sheltered bay on the south coast, with the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle on the headland beside the warehouses.

Which Lagavulin whiskies should you try?

The 16 Year Old is the flagship and one of the most recognised Islay bottles anywhere. Alongside it you will typically find a younger 8 Year Old and the Distillers Edition, finished in sherry casks. Limited annual releases also appear around the Islay festival and Diageo’s Special Releases, so ask what is available at the distillery.

How does Lagavulin fit into an Islay route?

Lagavulin is the middle stop of the Kildalton three: Laphroaig is just to the west and Ardbeg a short way east, so all three fit comfortably into one day, with lunch at Ardbeg’s café between tours.

Since 2 June 2026 Port Ellen ferry terminal has been closed, with reopening expected around 2029, and all sailings from Kennacraig arrive at Port Askaig. From there the south coast is roughly 35–40 minutes by road, so book the later tour slots on arrival days. Read the Islay ferry guide for planning.

Why visit Lagavulin with a private driver?

Scotland’s drink-drive limit is lower than in the rest of the UK, so in practice whoever drives cannot join the tasting. Distillery “driver’s drams” to take away help, but you still miss tasting with the expert. With a private driver, everyone in your group tastes, bottles ride safely in the car, and the day is planned around tour slots rather than ferry anxiety. If a sailing is cancelled, our driver rebooks the earliest one.

Our 3-day Islay whisky private tour is priced per vehicle: £2,274 for 1–2 guests, £2,892 for 3, £2,910 for 4 — including the Toyota Alphard, a bilingual driver-guide, fuel and parking, the return ferry for car and passengers, and two hotel nights on Islay. Distillery tours are paid at the distillery’s own price; we can book them for you.
