Islay whisky trip: private driver vs self-drive vs group tour

On Islay the real question is who drives after the tastings. Self-drive is cheapest — the car ferry plus two adults is about £126.80 return in summer 2026 — but the driver cannot drink. Our private 3-day tour is £2,274 for two or £2,910 for four, whole vehicle, including the ferry and two hotel nights. Since June 2026 every Islay sailing uses Port Askaig.

Why does tasting change everything on Islay?

Islay is a whisky island: a day can include three distilleries and several drams at each. Scotland's drink-drive limit is lower than in the rest of the UK, and even a small tasting can put a driver over it, so the self-drive party's driver either skips the whisky or takes samples away in driver's drams. With a private driver everyone in the party tastes, and nobody has to watch the clock or their glass.

How do the costs compare for 2 and 4 people?

Ferry figures are CalMac's sample summer 2026 fares from Kennacraig to Port Askaig (car £90.80 return, adult £18.00 return); check the current fare when you book. Self-drive also needs car hire, fuel, the long drive to Kennacraig and two nights' accommodation on the island. Our price covers the Alphard, a bilingual driver-guide, fuel and parking, the return ferry for car and all passengers, and two hotel nights (two per room). Distillery tours are paid separately at distillery prices, and we can book them.

What changed with the ferry in 2026?

CalMac closed the Port Ellen ferry terminal on 2 June 2026 for redevelopment, with reopening expected around 2029. All Kennacraig–Islay sailings now use Port Askaig, about 20.8 miles from Port Ellen. That matters because Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg sit on the south coast: from Port Askaig, allow extra road time. Book the car ferry well ahead, especially in summer; vehicles check in 30 minutes before sailing.

If a sailing is cancelled, self-drivers must rebook and rearrange hotels themselves. On our tour the driver rebooks; each extra island day is £200 plus the driver's room.

What about a group tour to Islay?

Group whisky tours to Islay exist and can cost less per person for solo travellers or couples. We have not verified current prices or terms, so check the operator directly. As with any coach tour, expect a fixed distillery list, set tasting times and limited luggage space — which matters if you plan to bring bottles home.

Which option should you choose?

Choose self-drive if your group includes a non-drinker happy to drive, you are confident on single-track island roads and you want the lowest cost. Choose a private driver if everyone wants to taste, you want ferry and hotels handled, or you travel as three or four, where the per-person cost falls to £727.50 for four.
