For one or two people, a large group tour is the cheapest way to see Skye from Edinburgh, from about £185–£225 per adult for three days before accommodation. Self-drive gives freedom but means long days on single-track roads. A private driver costs £1,530 for the whole vehicle over three days, which becomes good value for three or four guests, families and anyone carrying luggage.
How do the three options compare side by side?
| Private driver (MegaSpace) | Self-drive | Large group tour | |

Group-tour prices are published 'from' prices for 2026 and vary by season; check the operator's own page before booking. Our private price is for the whole Toyota Alphard and includes the driver's accommodation; your hotels are not included, though we can arrange them at £250 per room per night.
When is a group tour the better choice?
We will say it plainly: if you are travelling alone or as a couple on a tight budget, a large group tour is cheaper. Three days with a coach operator starts from roughly £185–£225 per adult, so two people pay around £370–£450 before hotels, against £1,530 for a private vehicle. You also meet other travellers and the guide does the talking.
The trade-offs are a fixed schedule, up to around 16 people at every stop, early departures from a city-centre bus station and tight luggage rules. If those do not bother you, a group tour is a sensible choice.

Self-drive suits confident drivers who enjoy planning and want total freedom. The cost is car hire, fuel and parking, and car-hire prices swing widely by season, so get a dated quote rather than relying on averages. Many hire firms also set a minimum driver age or add young-driver fees.
Be realistic about Skye roads. Many are single-track with passing places: pull in to the left, or wait opposite a passing place on the right, let following traffic overtake and never park in a passing place. Popular car parks fill early and most now charge for parking. And whoever drives cannot join a whisky tasting.
When is a private driver worth it?
The maths changes with group size. At £1,530 for the vehicle, four guests pay £382.50 each — close to the group-tour range — while getting a vehicle to themselves, a flexible route and door-to-door pickup in Edinburgh. A private driver is also the easiest option for families with young children, older travellers who need more stops, and anyone with large suitcases or plans to buy whisky along the way.
Your driver handles the single-track roads, parking and timing, so nobody arrives at the hotel tired from eight hours at the wheel. Everyone in the party can taste at a distillery.
What about children, older parents and luggage?
Families and multi-generation trips have their own guide: Isle of Skye with children and elderly parents covers pacing, rest stops and which sights suit whom. Heavy luggage is covered in Scotland tours with heavy luggage. In short: group tours may set a minimum age and usually limit you to one case each; with us, tell us children's ages and heights when booking and we will confirm suitable seats, and tell us your case count.

Is a group tour cheaper than a private driver to Skye?
For one or two people, yes. Large group tours start from about £185–£225 per adult for three days, while our private tour is £1,530 for the whole vehicle; for four guests the per-person gap becomes small.
Is it hard to drive on Skye?
Many roads are single-track with passing places, and popular car parks fill early. Confident drivers manage, but days are long and the driver cannot join whisky tastings.
Are hotels included in the private Skye tour?
The driver's accommodation is included; guests' hotels are not, but we can arrange them at £250 per room per night.
