Bowmore sits in the island’s main village on the shore of Loch Indaal and is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, founded in the late 18th century. Its whisky is medium-peated and balanced, with fruit and honey alongside sea-smoke. Bowmore does not publish tour prices online, so book directly; it is about 15–20 minutes’ drive from the Port Askaig ferry.

What makes Bowmore distinctive?
Bowmore is generally regarded as one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland, established in the late 1700s, and it is now owned by Suntory Global Spirits. Two things set it apart on a visit:
- Its own floor maltings. Bowmore is one of the few distilleries that still malts part of its own barley by hand, turning it on a malting floor and drying it over a peat fire.
- The No. 1 Vaults. Bowmore’s oldest maturation warehouse sits right on the edge of Loch Indaal, reputedly below sea level, and the sea air is part of the house character.
The distillery is also in the middle of the island, in Bowmore village (the island capital), so it is the natural stop between the south coast, the Rhinns and the north.
What does Bowmore whisky taste like?
If Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are the heavy hitters, Bowmore is the middle ground: a medium-peated malt where smoke sits alongside tropical fruit, honey and a salty, coastal note. That makes it a good first Islay distillery for guests who are curious about peat but not sure they love it.
The core range is usually built around the 12, 15 and 18 Year Old, with a separate range for travel retail and occasional older or limited releases. Ranges change, so ask at the shop what is currently available — some bottlings are only sold at the distillery.
Our 3-day Islay whisky private tour includes a Toyota Alphard with a bilingual driver-guide, the return ferry and two hotel nights on the island. From £2,274 for 1–2 guests, whole vehicle.

How does Bowmore fit into an Islay route?
Since the Port Ellen ferry terminal closed on 2 June 2026 (it is expected to reopen around 2029), every sailing from Kennacraig arrives at Port Askaig in the north-east. Bowmore is roughly 10 miles away, about 15–20 minutes by road, which makes it an easy first or last stop on ferry days.
- Pair with the Rhinns: Bruichladdich is about 15 minutes round Loch Indaal, and Kilchoman roughly 20 minutes from Bowmore.
- Pair with the north: Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain are beside Port Askaig.
- South coast day: Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are around 20 minutes south of Bowmore, so Bowmore works well on the way down or back.
All drive times are approximate; single-track roads and farm traffic can slow things down.
Why visit Bowmore with a private driver?
Islay's distillery tours end with a tasting, and the best ones end with several. Scotland's drink-drive limit (50 mg per 100 ml of blood) is lower than in England, and in practice a single proper dram can put a driver over it. Most distilleries offer a driver's dram to take away, but that means the person at the wheel tastes everything hours later at the hotel. With a private driver everyone tastes on the spot, and the car carries any bottles you buy.
Our driver-guide also knows the single-track roads, the passing-place etiquette and the timing of the ferry at Port Askaig — which matters more than ever now that every Kennacraig sailing lands there.
