Bruichladdich is a Victorian distillery on the western shore of Loch Indaal, revived in 2001, that makes three very different whiskies: unpeated Bruichladdich, heavily peated Port Charlotte and the ultra-peated Octomore, plus The Botanist gin. In 2026 its tours start from £15 for a 90-minute guided visit. It is about 25–30 minutes’ drive from the Port Askaig ferry.

What makes Bruichladdich different from other Islay distilleries?
Bruichladdich was founded in the late 19th century, fell silent, and was famously revived in 2001 by a small independent team; it has been owned by Rémy Cointreau since 2012 and is a certified B Corp. It sits on the Rhinns of Islay, the island’s western peninsula, looking back across Loch Indaal to Bowmore.
Unusually for Islay, the house style is unpeated. The distillery puts a strong emphasis on where its barley comes from, including Islay-grown barley, and on experimenting with casks. Visitors often comment on the old Victorian equipment still in use and the relaxed, slightly unconventional atmosphere.
Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore: what’s the difference?
| Range | Style | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Bruichladdich (e.g. The Classic Laddie) | Unpeated, floral, fruity, barley-forward | Guests who do not like smoke |
| Port Charlotte | Heavily peated, but with a soft, sweet edge | Classic Islay smoke lovers |
| Octomore | Extremely heavily peated; often described as the most heavily peated whisky series | Peat enthusiasts and collectors |
The same site also produces The Botanist, a gin made with botanicals foraged on Islay. A tasting here is therefore one of the best ways to compare peated and unpeated spirit side by side.
Our 3-day Islay whisky private tour includes a Toyota Alphard with a bilingual driver-guide, the return ferry and two hotel nights on the island. From £2,274 for 1–2 guests, whole vehicle.

How does Bruichladdich fit into an Islay route?
With the Port Ellen ferry terminal closed since 2 June 2026, all ferries from Kennacraig arrive at Port Askaig. Bruichladdich is roughly 25–30 minutes from there by road, and about 15 minutes from Bowmore around the head of Loch Indaal.
- A Rhinns day: Bruichladdich and Kilchoman sit on the same side of the island; add the village of Port Charlotte and the beach at Machir Bay.
- Bowmore in between: Bowmore is the natural link between the Rhinns and the ferry.
- Keep the south coast separate: Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are a full day on their own.
Times are approximate; allow extra time on single-track roads.
Why visit Bruichladdich with a private driver?
Islay's distillery tours end with a tasting, and the best ones end with several. Scotland's drink-drive limit (50 mg per 100 ml of blood) is lower than in England, and in practice a single proper dram can put a driver over it. Most distilleries offer a driver's dram to take away, but that means the person at the wheel tastes everything hours later at the hotel. With a private driver everyone tastes on the spot, and the car carries any bottles you buy.
Our driver-guide also knows the single-track roads, the passing-place etiquette and the timing of the ferry at Port Askaig — which matters more than ever now that every Kennacraig sailing lands there.
Our 3-day Islay whisky private tour includes a Toyota Alphard with a bilingual driver-guide, the return ferry and two hotel nights on the island. From £2,274 for 1–2 guests, whole vehicle.
