What should you do first when your flight is cancelled?
Stay calm and work through these steps before you book anything yourself:
- Contact the airline at the desk, in its app or by phone. Queues at the desk can be long, so try the app at the same time.
- Ask for rerouting or a refund. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says that if you still want to travel, the airline must find you an alternative flight, and you can choose to fly as soon as possible or at a later date that suits you.
- Ask about care. Airlines must provide reasonable food and drink, a means of communication and, if you are rerouted to the next day, a hotel and transport to it.
- Keep every receipt. If the airline cannot arrange care, the CAA's view is that you may arrange reasonable care yourself and claim the cost back. Keep spending modest.
- Check other airports. A seat from Glasgow, Prestwick, Aberdeen or Newcastle may get you home a day earlier.

Often, yes — but you need to ask. The CAA notes that you may be able to switch to another airline flying significantly sooner, and that other suitable modes of transport may be offered. If you accept a flight from another airport, ask the airline in writing (chat or email is fine) whether it will pay for, or reimburse, the ground transport to get you there. Policies differ between airlines and situations, so we cannot promise you will be reimbursed — but a clear written answer and a receipt give you the best chance.
